The Artist and Her Work is an exhibition of self-portraiture that aims to open up a critical dialogue about visual representations of the self, created by women.
Self-portraits, while intimate in origin, become shared as a dialogue; a contextual interaction between the artist and the viewer. The self-portrait can be both documentation and an embodied language, establishing conceptual placement of self.
Self-portraits can take many forms. The conversation between the artist and the work is an exploration into self-perception. The dual role of subject and creator allows the viewer to see the artist on their own terms. The work embodies the artist through their mark making and the metaphysical rendering of
the self.
This exhibition raises questions of identity, cultural conditions and concepts of beauty. The artists in this exhibition use their own experience and their own bodies as source material for their works, exploring ideas of self-portraiture and narrative, bound intimately with their personal biographies.
Questions of identity are posed through critique of representation, narcissistic exhibitionism, conceptual self-perception and self examination. This reflection is then turned upon social and cultural conditions, the self-portrait given physical, psychological, metaphorical or discursive considerations.
