STACKS HISTORY
The initial impetus of STACKS Projects can be traced back to 2015, over a number of coffee dates shared between friends. Throughout these rendezvous, they would lament over the lack of affordable spaces for artists in Sydney. Having recently graduated from art school, they all poignantly felt the absence of the strong sense of community that they had experienced as students within art institutions. These original founding members were Michael McIntyre, Joanne Makas, Kyle Murrell, Ioulia Terizis, Tim Corne, Gemma Avery, Kaya Clarkson and Sophie Hopmeier
In response to these conversations, McIntyre generously offered his studio on William Street for the group to use as a project space. This quickly turned into a dynamic hub of activity, encouraging the development of experimental and expanded practices, and the liberal exchange of knowledge and ideas. Significantly, this creatively charged space acted as a catalyst for collaborative partnerships and lasting friendships.
From these humble beginnings, STACKS was born.
At the time, the function of STACKS was clearly defined, providing the support, resources and infrastructure for both emerging and mid-career artists alike, underpinned by a rigorous curatorial framework.
The following year the Victoria Street site was found, cementing the presence of STACKS in not only the local community, but also within Sydney’s broader arts and cultural landscape.
To this day, STACKS remains a fluid space welcoming many artists to exhibit, connect and contribute in enacting its unique vision.
