Drawing upon in-depth research on trauma across time and space, Living with the Past seeks to explore the intelligence and materiality of nature in relation to violence, memory, and human survival. Central to the concept of this body of work is the intriguing role Sphagnum moss played in history and its relationship with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Showcasing the latest body of work by emerging interdisciplinary artist Stella Chen, Living with the Past aims to create an entry point to the fascinating stories behind the humble yet resilient natural materials that withstand human time. The exhibition approaches the issue from a philosophical perspective in the form of installations, sculptures and photographs experimenting with a range of materials such as fragmented plaster, Sphagnum moss and surgical cotton wool.
Living with the Past is a tribute to those who keep their heads above the water. Reimagining and reconfiguring the organic materials, the exhibition delves into the healing property and the subtle aesthetics of something that is at once ephemeral and immortal.
The artist and the curator together will present an artist talk/interview as the closing event of the exhibition. There will also be a printed publication available for purchase including essays and interviews, etc. This is to facilitate idea exchanges across different platforms with diverse audiences given the conceptual nature of the exhibition.
