curated by Zachary Harold
exhibition 14 February – 3 March, 2019
opening on Wednesday 13 February 2019, 6 – 8pm
Alexander’s Lover explores romance, kinship and tension; represented through the entanglement of compositions, media and artists. Through this treatment, objects are given a more human aesthetic, their proximity to one another invoking an unseen language.
This exploration of ideas such as attraction and dialogue was first conceived after viewing films by Italian filmmaker and Director Luca Gaudaanino and his ability to create intense narratives and intimacy between characters.
The title of the exhibition is a reference to Hephaestion, Alexander the Great's close childhood friend and the myth surrounding their intensely intimate and secretive relationship. Incidentally, the term 'Alexander's Lover' is also a lyric that features in a song played in Gaudaanino’s film 'Call Me By Your Name', titled 'Mystery of Love' by Sufjan Stevens.
